It has been often quoted that change is inevitable, but progress is optional. As we would all agree, this Nation and the world at large are experiencing unprecedented times of political social and economic turmoil. Like every other aspect of our lives, our Fraternity is impacted by these unpredictable and mercurial times.
The challenging economic forces that we are observing have had an impact on Chi Phi, as well as, every other fraternity, individual and business in our Nation. Although our endowment portfolio was down, fortunately our fundraising income was up. You'll find the annual report of the Chi Phi Educational Trust later in this issue. I think you'll agree that alumni support is having a positive impact on the Fraternity and the quality of life of our undergraduate members throughout our chapters.
One of the most significant changes worth noting is that our membership has risen across the country!
For me, these membership statistics are an extremely important aspect of our future growth. While it is important that we continue to expand to new campuses, it is even more important that we support our current chapters and help them succeed. I believe we are making significant progress on that front.
Young men are looking for opportunities to position themselves in a competitive marketplace. They are looking for opportunities to expand their knowledge and leadership abilities. The out-of-classroom learning experiences provided by Chi Phi remain as important today as at any period in our history. While there will always be room for improvement, our efforts are making a difference, and students are validating this difference by joining our ranks.
When I assumed the office of Grand Alpha last June, I set forth a strategic plan for the Fraternity – the first formally-adopted strategic plan we've had in many years.
The plan revolves around four key areas: Chapter Health, Governance & Structure, Alumni Development and Heritage Preservation.
Implementing this plan will require a bold and challenging commitment to changes that will ultimately lead to substantive progress . . . possibly an uncomfortable path for some. However, I strongly believe it is quintessential to the future of Chi Phi that we take the necessary steps that will ensure we remain relevant to young men, their parents, our alumni and our higher education partners.
I am truly excited about the future of Chi Phi. But, I warn you, it will involve embracing a vision that constantly seeks to improve upon the status quo and that my Brothers, means change.
Ownership of the future is not the exclusive domain of the Grand Alpha, the Grand Council or any special interest group. It belongs to each and every one of us. I hope you'll join us on this journey, because it has already begun!
